In today’s instalment of “Tech Thursday with SNOK”, we look at one of the most groundbreaking tools SAP has introduced into its ecosystem - Joule. This advanced AI assistant, integrated with a range of SAP products, is changing the way users interact with business systems.
What is Joule?
Joule is an AI assistant developed by SAP that integrates with a range of SAP solutions, such as SAP SuccessFactors, SAP S/4HANA Cloud (Private and Public Edition), SAP Build Work Zone, SAP Start, SAP Product Lifecycle Management, and SAP Integrated Business Planning for Supply Chain.
Joule offers users conversational access to SAP systems, enabling them to ask questions in natural language, receive contextual answers, and use advanced artificial intelligence functions for everyday business tasks.
Key benefits
-
Native integration with SAP solutions - Joule operates directly within the interface of a given SAP application
-
Contextual answers - the assistant understands business context and the specifics of SAP products
-
Increased productivity - users can obtain the information they need more quickly
-
Personalisation - the ability to adapt Joule to specific business environments
-
Document grounding - an option to enrich Joule’s knowledge base with an organisation’s own documents
Architecture and requirements
Integrating Joule with SAP solutions requires appropriate environment configuration. The core elements of this architecture are:
-
SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) - the platform on which Joule runs and which manages the integration
-
SAP Cloud Identity Services - provides authentication and user identity management
-
SAP Build Work Zone, standard edition - used to handle navigation scenarios
-
Destination configuration - configuration of access points to different systems
Deploying Joule is made easier by a dedicated “booster” available in SAP BTP, which automates most of the configuration process.
Supported SAP products
Joule can currently be integrated with the following solutions:
-
SAP SuccessFactors
-
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (from version 2023 FPS01)
-
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
-
SAP Build Work Zone, standard edition
-
SAP Start (as part of the Early Adopter Care programme)
-
SAP Product Lifecycle Management
-
SAP Integrated Business Planning for Supply Chain
Document grounding - enriching the knowledge base
A particularly interesting feature of Joule is the ability to “ground” AI responses in an organisation’s own documents. This optional feature allows for:
-
Uploading documents (up to 2,000) from Microsoft SharePoint
-
Support for various file formats (PDF, Word, HTML, JPG, PNG, TIFF)
-
Daily automatic content updates
-
Using context from company documents in Joule’s responses
Limitations and challenges
There are a number of limitations to bear in mind with Joule:
-
Joule currently supports English only for conversations
-
A single Joule subscription can only be integrated with one tenant of a given SAP product
-
Joule requires OpenID Connect trust configuration with an Identity Authentication tenant
-
For integration with SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, Joule is only available under Rise with SAP, and only in data centres managed by SAP
-
There are throughput limitations - users can send a maximum of 3,000 requests per minute to Joule
